A Fragrant Sacrifice

“Fragrance” by Mandy Adendorff

Can you imagine buying a gift for someone that was worth one year of your salary?  That’s what the woman did in the gospel of Mark 14:1-11.

A woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly oil of spikenard. Then she broke the flask and poured it on His head. Mark 14:3 (NKJV).

Jesus had evidently transformed her life. To express her immense gratitude, she poured out the alabaster jar filled with the costly oil of spikenard on Jesus. Not only did this woman pour out her heart in sacrificial worship, but her gift strengthened Jesus’ physical heart to endure the beatings and crucifixion.

I’m guessing that this woman was unaware of the therapeutic properties of Spikenard, since science was not advanced in her time. According to a 2012 article in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Spikenard has been used to treat hysteria, mental weakness and has cardio protective properties. This was certainly needed for the torture that Jesus would soon endure (see end of article for additional therapeutic properties*).

She spilled the precious oil – a fragrant offering.

This woman did a simple, sacrificial act whose impact flowed far beyond what she could have imagined.

  1. Jesus affirmed that her costly gift was to prepare for His burial (The King of Kings).
  2. Her story was recorded in three gospels.
  3. What Jesus proclaimed became reality:

Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her. Mark 14:8

Over the centuries, the lives of millions, possibly billions, have been impacted from this women’s simple act of sacrifice.

Jesus spilled His precious blood – a fragrant offering.

Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God (Ephesians 5:2). He took our sin and guilt upon Himself on the cross, so that we can live in freedom and have eternal life with God in heaven.

When you think about it, an offering of 1 year’s worth of salary doesn’t match up to what Jesus sacrificed on the cross for us. We can never give enough. However, the woman who poured the costly oil on Jesus is an example of how blessings can spill beyond measure. When we live every heartbeat as an offering to Jesus, the rippling effect reaches people we will never know.

A kind word, a note of encouragement, sharing about the love of Jesus, serving at a soup kitchen, giving our tithes and offerings, praying for others, are some of the many ways we can be a daily, fragrant offering.

I invite you to listen to this song, and answer this question:

How can I spill my heart as an offering to my King?

Your Are Worthy

This alabaster jar

is all I have of worth

I break it at your feet Lord

It’s less than you deserve

You’re far more beautiful

and precious than the oil.

The sum of my desires

and the fullness of my joy.

Like you spilled your blood

I spill my heart as an offering to my king.

Here I am, take me

As an offering

Here I am giving

Every heartbeat for Your glory

Take me.

This time that I have left

Is all I have of worth

I lay it at your feet Lord

It’s less than you deserve

And though I’ve little strength

And though my days are few

You gave your life for me

So I will live my life for You.

Like you spilled your blood

I spill my heart as an offering to my King.

Here I am, take me

As an offering

Here I am giving

Every heartbeat for Your glory

Take me.

Worthy Worthy

You are Worthy

Worthy Is the Lord.

Here I am, take me

As an offering

Here I am giving

Every heartbeat for Your glory

Worthy Worthy

You are Worthy

Worthy is the Lord.

Holy Holy

You are Holy

Holy is the Lord.
