Bug Repellent with Essential Oils – Children & Safety Warning

Bug Repellent with Essential Oils – Children & Safety Warning

Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes. – Proverbs 19:2 (NLT).

Enthusiasm about the incredible benefits of essential oils is has been spreading! However, since essential oils have flooded the market, a lot of misinformation has been spread through social media. Let me ask you a question.

True or False. Are bug repellants made with essential oils safe for all ages since they are natural?

The answer is…. FALSE. I’m grateful for a friend who contacted me before making a DIY (Do It Yourself) blend for herself and her children. She asked me about this recipe she found on Facebook:

20 Drops Lemongrass

20 Drops Eucalyptus

4 oz Water

Add all the ingredients in a spray bottle….Shake Well! Safe for humans and dogs.

Share this recipe with your friends to keep them safe.

Here are some insights about the above recipe:

  1. Eucalyptus is NOT SAFE to apply to or near the face of infants or children under ten years of age. According to Robert Tisserand, author of Essential Oil Safety, essential oils high in 1/8 cineole can cause CNS (Central Nervous System) and breathing problems in young children. Most of the varieties of eucalyptus are composed of 65-85% 1/8 cineole.1 The above recipe gives no warning of this.
  2. Water and oil do not mix. Lemongrass Oil can be skin sensitizing. The above recommendation of 1% dilution may be irritating to the skin. It is recommended that lemongrass have a maximum of a maximum of .7% in any blend. 2 Even if you shake it well, it does not completely mix. As a result, there may be droplets of oil that get on the skin that increase the chance of skin sensitization.
  3. Credentials of the Author – this was posted on a Facebook page that primarily provided information for woman about relationships. There was no indication that she had training in aromatherapy. Evidently, the person shared this recipe from somewhere else. Lesson – check the credentials of the person sharing the recipe, and are there any credible references to back up the claim to keep your friends safe?
  4. Animals – there is a whole different protocol for using essential oils with animals. I am not an expert, but if this blend is questionable for people, then it is not recommended for smaller creatures. So how do you find a bug repellant that is safe for you and your children? I’m grateful that my friend came to me for advice. I recommended that she review two products from Plant Therapy. Plant Therapy has a full team of certified aromatherapists. In addition, one of the top experts in essential oil safety reviews the GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectometry) reports of each batch of oil that Plant Therapy receives.   I respect their cautionary action to ensure that their essential oils are pure and of high quality. Plant Therapy offers:

  1. Shield Me. This is part of the KIDSAFE line of products that Plant Therapy has designed to be safe for children.
  2. Nature Shield for ages 10 and older. This happens to have 2 of the ingredients mentioned in the above recipe – Lemongrass and Eucalyptus Globulus.

You can purchase a pure essential oil blend of Shield Me and Nature Shield for diffusing or make a DIY. You can also purchase them with the convenience of them being pre-diluted.

God has created the treasures of essential oils to protect us from these pesky annoyances as well diseases that some insects carry. Let’s tap into God’s wisdom and use them safely.

Plant Therapy Affiliate: Oils of Shakan has chosen to be an affiliate with Plant Therapy due to their strict protocol to ensure high quality, affordable products. If you plan to order Shield Me, Nature Shield or other products, I’d greatly appreciate it if you would use this link: Plant Therapy.

Fragrant blessings to you!
