Can Citrus Oils Help with Anxiety?

Citrus Oils for anxiety

In the last VLOG, I spoke about citrus oils & depression. Today, I will be discussing how the same oils may reduce anxiety. How can they be helpful for both?   God is a brilliant biologist and chemist! He created these oils to adapt to our body based on what we need – either more peace, joy or both! In scientific terms, it’s called being “adaptogenic.”

Several years ago, I experienced severe symptoms of PTSD. When I had flashbacks of past abuse, panic attacks hit me. I wish I knew about the citrus oils back then. I would have loved to have the Sunny Days inhaler tucked in my pocket when I needed to calm down and be able to think clearly again. I designed Sunny Days to help others who are experiencing intense stress. The lemon, grapefruit, orange, bergamot, and lime essential oils in this inhaler are truly soothing to the soul.

There are many other ways that citrus oils can be used:

  1. Diffuser – Add oils and diffuse in the main living area. In addition to being calming, citrus oils may help to build up the immune system to help to prevent colds and the flu.
  2. Shower – Add several drops to the floor of the shower and let the steam surround you in a fragrant mist (grapefruit is my favorite). This has also become a powerful prayer time for me where I get the best solutions to life’s challenges!
  3.  Sponges – Since citrus oils are anti-bacterial, add a few drops of lemon or sweet orange to your sponges to clean the kitchen or bathroom. You can also add them to an all natural cleanser. I am actually more motivated to clean since the fragrance of the oils lifts up my mood.

Caution: Citrus oils should not be put directly on the skin due to possible irritation and you should not go out in the sun after applying oils blends with citrus oils. See aromaweb for more information about citrus oils and safety.

I’m thankful citrus oils are one of many natural resources to help us in stressful times. Most of all, I’m grateful for Jesus, the Author of Creation, who created them.

One of my favorite verses that I have memorized and say out loud during tense times is from:

Philippians 4:6-7   Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
