Life with My 92 Year Old Mom!

LIFE was my favorite cereal in my childhood, but for many years it was not part of my mornings until recently.  LIFE cereal for breakfast is now part of doing “life” together with my mom.  It’s already been 18 months since I moved in with my mother after her second fall.  She could no longer live independently at the age of 91 due to permanent damage from her falls, and other frailties that go along with living to this ripe ol’ age.

Honestly, being the super independent person I am, I never imagined living with my mother. At the age of 55, I had a business to run, ministry commitments, and I truly enjoyed my freedom as a single woman.  This changed the evening of mom’s second major fall.  In the middle of the night, I heard a whisper in my heart that rang like church bells –“stay with your mom until the end.”  At the time, I thought she would pass away within a month, because God knew that I had things to do!  Of course, He also knew that I have a weak stomach and am not the hands on caregiver type.   Ahhh, how wrong I was.  My heavenly Father knows best. God pours out His supernatural grace for what He calls you to do.  I’ll never regret this cherished time of doing “LIFE” together.

Honoring my mother as one of God’s commandments includes sacrifices that are far outweighed by indescribable blessings.  I’ve developed a capacity to love in a manner that I did not know I was capable of.

God has given me a sense of humor in dealing with “LIFE”  that comes with old age.   Mom and I have had lots of belly laughs about bathroom mishaps, and I’ve accepted the new meaning of the word “Depends”.    Humor has been mixed with precious times of reading the Jesus Calling Devotional by Sarah Young, and our evening prayer times.  Love also grows deep in times of health crises. Love hurts when I see mom gasp for air due to fluid filling her lungs, and it’s time to call the ambulance once again.

Little did I know when I was a child, that I would be doing for mom, what she lovingly did for me in good and hard times. “LIFE” has come full circle.

After 4 visits to the hospital in less than 4 months, my mom and family decided it is best for her to receive hospice services.  The focus is on Comfort Care until she meets Jesus face to face.

Aromatherapy has been a part of my mom’s care since I moved in with her, and will continue to be a part of Comfort Care.   Here are various ways that I have used essential oils as a part of “LIFE TOGETHER WITH MOM”.

A Spray A Day Keeps the Itchy Away

The Frankincense Skin Nourisher with Lavender is mom’s absolute favorite!  Her feet are very dry and get itchy.  After rubbing in a couple of sprays, she’s golden.

Breathe and Stress Ease

Evergreen oils such as Balsam FirJuniper Berry and Cypress have helped mom breathe easier. I also add Sweet Orange or Frankincense to help reduce the anxiety related labored breathing. I use a total of 7-10 drops.  Plant Therapy and Bed Bath and Beyond have a great selection of diffusers.

Reducing Pain and Inflammation

Ya’ar Ease has helped reduce the occasional pain in mom’s knees. The essential oils in Ya’ar Ease may promote skeletal and/or respiratory health as indicated by the research studies cited HERE.

Although CALMcentration was designed to lower test anxiety, the arthritic swelling in mom’s hand has reduced considerably when using this roll on.   I also use CALMcentration when mom gets anxious. God’s treasures of essential oils have multiple uses!

Comfort Care for Rosie!

Although mom has lost her sense of smell, Spice of Life Air Freshener has been a life saver for me when the butt bombs fall.  Since the chemical components of the air freshener contain anti-bacterial properties, it also keeps the garbage nice and clean!

Comfort during the hospice care takes many forms. I’m looking forward to more special moments with mom. I’m grateful that the fragrance of God’s presence and the oils He created will surround mom and me this Mother’s Day until she reaches her eternal home.

Yes Rosie, life sure does come full circle when we take on the blessing of caring for our elderly parents. People who don’t have the opportunity, or choose not to really miss out on the blessing and the love shared. You are an awesome daughter!!
